Our Story
Our story begins in 1915. The first telephone call is made in the USA, theory of relativity saw the light of day and modern mascara was in the shops. Great grandfather Anton found out that his first child was going to be born, grandma Julija. It was time to build a house that was going to be a home for generations long after 1915.
Grandma Julija was youngest of five children in the family. She grew up surrounded with nature, agriculture and farm animals. Later on, she met the love of her life in the village of Dolenje pri Jelsanah. Grandpa Jakob loved horses and took care of them in the foothill of the hill the villagers called Otok. This translates to island in Slovenian, as the hill emerges from the meadows like an island from the sea. Thus grandpa was long known as the Otokar.
The hill was theirs to keep and the land to sustain them. With long orchards of apples, walnuts and potatoes, the trading went well and life was good. It was time to start a family. Jana, Toni, Amalija and Ema were born in this house, just like their mother. They grew up together on this land after which they went their separate ways to the USA and Croatia.
The villa Otokar stands proudly today in reminiscence of the century-old lineage of the Otokari family.
During the extensive renovation in 2019, the original groundwork was kept along with several details that remind of the very beginnings. Oldest grape vines in the village that were kept safe throughout the century, lintel above the main entrance doors with 1915 engraved, and a well with spring water which is still used for watering the plants.
The house changed throughout the years, but the peace of nature surrounding it remains. The hill behind the fence is a natural habitat for wild animals, from birds to foxes, and sometimes you can even see a herd of deer crossing the road a couple of meters away from the house.
